Senior Technical Application Engineer

As part of our SaaS organization, we operate multiple business-critical Life & Pension platforms, including LeanApps and Lifetime, delivered from our secure, ISO-certified private cloud. These platforms support some of the largest insurers and pension providers in the Netherlands and beyond.
Key about your role
As a Senior Technical Application Engineer, you are one of the key technical experts responsible for the stability, security, performance, and continuous improvement of our Life & Pension application landscape.
The role has a strong focus on the LeanApps technology stack (Linux, Oracle, WebLogic, Java) while also supporting selected Lifetime platform components (Windows Server, IIS, Tomcat, SQL Server).
In this senior role you:
- Take ownership of complex incidents, problems, and technical escalations across multiple customer environments.
- Guard and improve application availability, resilience, and performance by implementing structural improvements and preventive measures.
- Design, plan, and execute patching and upgrade cycles for the underlying technology stack, including:
- Oracle WebLogic
- Oracle Database
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Java
- Windows Server
- Tomcat
- SQL Server
- Manage the full lifecycle of client and server certificates, ensuring secure deployment and timely renewals.
- Support application and integration provisioning, including deployments, whitelisting, network and security configurations, and end-to-end validation.
- Drive capacity management and monitoring across application, middleware, database, and infrastructure layers.
- Play a leading role in disaster recovery testing, failover exercises, penetration tests, and external audits.
- Automate operational activities through scripting, tooling, and configuration management.
- Contribute to the standardization of operational processes, runbooks, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate closely with Product Development, SaaS Platform teams, Database Administrators, Security teams, and customer stakeholders.
- Mentor junior engineers and actively contribute to knowledge sharing within the team.
You are comfortable making decisions in complex situations, balancing customer expectations, operational risk, security requirements, and business priorities.

Key about you
You recognize yourself in the following profile:
- You have at least a completed HBO Beta or academic degree in Information Technology or a related field.
- You have 5+ years of experience in technical application management, infrastructure engineering, middleware engineering or a similar role supporting business-critical applications.
- You have experience working in regulated or highly available enterprise environments.
- You have strong hands-on experience with Oracle WebLogic, Oracle Database administration and troubleshooting, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 8/9).
- You are familiar with Java-based application environments and understand how application, middleware and infrastructure components work together.
- You have practical experience with security hardening, patching and vulnerability management.
- You have a solid understanding of certificates (PKI), networking, firewalls, proxies and load balancers.
- You have experience with Windows Server, Tomcat, IIS and SQL Server.
- You are comfortable with scripting and automation using Bash, PowerShell or Python, and have experience with monitoring, deployment and configuration management tools such as Ansible or Puppet.
- Experience with SaaS operations, cloud-hosted enterprise applications and ITIL-based operational processes is a plus.
- Experience in the insurance, pension or financial services domain is a strong plus.
- You are analytical, structured and pragmatic, able to quickly assess complex situations and determine the right priorities.
- You are a communicative team player with a proactive, ownership-driven mindset and can translate technical issues into business impact.
- You are willing to participate in the standby/on-call rota and occasionally work outside regular office hours.
